The Official Goodbye

It’s official.  Jay has left for his forever home and has started his life with his new people.  He has now gained a place on the “Happy Tails” page, and I have no doubt in my mind that he will have a wonderful life.  I’m sure we will continue to cross paths with Jay in the future.  His new mom works at the local university by our house, and it is a popular place where people bring their dogs (and we bring Bailey) so it is likely we will continue to get to see Jay there.  We will also take Bailey kayaking in the summer and visit Jay as he goes to work with his new dad at the boating rental place.  So today won’t be the last time we see Jay, but it marks the end of his journey with us and the start of his new life in his forever home :)

Be a good boy, Jay.  We love you.

Day 37: Jay… the dog with the ever changing ears

One thing I love about Jay is that his ears change all the time based on his mood.  Normally they are both up, angled out to the side. When he is alert, they both stand straight up.   Sometimes one is up and one is down.  When he is walking or running, they are both folded back flat on his head (more aerodynamic that way lol).

When he is sleepy though, they are both flopped over.  It is so cute.  I walked out in the living room and saw them both flopped over and had to grab my camera to snap a photo.  It’s not the best photo composition wise from a photography viewpoint, but I didn’t want to make any movements that would “alert” him and make his ears stand back up.

Here is also a bonus photo from last night.  Bailey’s “time out” place during play sessions is normally under our coffee table because the foster dogs are normally too big to fit under there as well. However our coffee table is moved out of the living room still because of the party on Saturday.   So he had to improvise and hid under our butcher block cart in the kitchen instead. Jay just laid next to it and was like “C’mon!  Come back out and play!”

(Have I mentioned before that I really hate indoor lighting?)

Have a good Monday!

Day 36: A Day to Rest and Catch Up

Just like you would probably have guessed,  today has been a very low-key day for us.  After Bailey’s party yesterday, it has been a day just to relax and do nothing.   As you can see,  Bailey was enjoying a little cuddle on the couch with his hedgehog, one of his new birthday toys.  Thanks Liz!

Since we clearly haven’t done anything interesting today, I’m using this blog to catch up on some random stuff and news.

By popular request, here is Brewster in all his ridiculous glory yesterday with as many toys as possible stuffed into that Lab mouth of his.   In this photo he actually has 6 things stuffed in his mouth.   He had a hoof chew, a platypus, a turtle, a bear, a pig, and Lamby.

and a video

A piece of good news… The rescue group that we foster for (Great Dog Rescue New England) was having a meet and greet for our dogs that are up for adoption and currently being fostered here in New England.  We did not attend with Jay.  Why?  Well, it’s pretty safe to say, though not official, that he has found his forever home.  A couple came to meet him yesterday evening, and they seemed to be the perfect match and everything I would want for him.  Of course, they fell in love with Jay as well. Although they said that before they even met him, they were already pretty sure they wanted him based on his photos and everything they heard about him.  There are still a couple steps to finish up in the process, but Jay should be getting his forever home very soon.  We’ll be sad to see him go, as we always are, but it makes it so much easier when you know that they are going to such great homes.  We have a tradition of taking “final goodbye photos” with our fosters so I’m sure you’ll be seeing those with Jay in a few days.

Here are a couple of videos of Jay and Bailey as well…

Here is just Jay being super cute

Day 30: Dog Parks Relieve Stress… For People

When the weather is nice, we take Bailey to the park daily.  Honestly, it is more for me than for him. There is nothing more relaxing for me than watching dogs play.

Something about just watching them run around and wrestle and play.  It’s therapeutic.  It is as though there is not a worry in the world, and the only thing that matters is chewing on each others faces (Bailey and Gaston’s favorite activity) and who can catch each other in a game of chase.

I was in a really bad mood earlier today.  Work wasn’t particularly bad… just tiring.  On top of that, some other incidents at home just really hit a nerve.  However after some time at the dog park, my spirits are high again.  It was just what I needed – to be able to sit in the grass, sun in my face, and watch the pups let out all their pent up energy.  As they let out their energy, my stress goes along with it.

Here are some extra photos, in case you are also in need of a Monday Pick-Me Up.

and last but not least… One tired out, dirty faced puppy.

Day 28: Saturday Settling In

I wasn’t planning on this being the shot of the day, but since this afternoon, I haven’t been feeling all that great and haven’t felt like taking out my camera again. So I decided to just use one of the photos that I took of Jay at the dogpark in the morning. I took these hoping to get some good pictures to replace his photos on petfinder (because they seriously suck). I might take some more tomorrow and then pick out the best ones to send to the rescue to be posted.

The morning was pretty busy. We stopped by a local Pet Store, RiverDog, so that they could meet Jay. The owners of this store, Peter and Priscilla, are so ridiculously nice, and they are so good to our fosters. Our relationship started with them when we got our first foster dog.  That weekend was the first “Somerville Dog Festival” that our town was hosting.  RiverDog was a sponsor, and they were putting on a fashion show/silent auction.  Upon meeting Kimmie a few days prior to the festival and learning how she was up for adoption, they fit her into the fashion show so she could get some publicity and have it announced that she was available for adoption as she was on the “runway”. They advertise our fosters on their facebook and website.  They gave one of our foster dogs a brand new jacket for free in the Winter, because we had some horribly harsh weather for about a month and a half straight.  During the winter they had “open play” in their daycare room on Saturdays for a warm, non-snowy place for the dogs to play, and they never charged us for our fosters.  They are just wonderful, and we have ever since made it a point to give them our business and to bring our fosters to see them.

After visiting at the pet store, we went to the dog park.  We learned that Jay loves to run, however he doesn’t like to be away from us, so he would run and chase the other dogs, but immediately turn around to check back in with us every 5 seconds.  After only having him for a day, he is extremely attached to us and doesn’t want to leave our side.  I wasn’t able to get any very interesting photos because whenever I backed away from him, he came right back at my feet.  So today’s picture (and all my photos from today) are taken from a really boring angle.  I don’t know if he thinks that we are going to disappear and leave him or not.  It’s really sweet but at the same time, I know he is going to have issues with being crated and home alone.  We went out shortly this afternoon, and he was barking up a storm shortly after we went outside.  It’ll be something we’ll have to work though.

Him and Bailey get along well.  They haven’t really played together yet, but they seem to like each other’s company.  This morning, Jay was following Bailey around where he was laying.  Bailey laying on the floor.  Jay laid next to him.  Bailey moved to the couch.  Jay followed him.  (Crappy phone pictures)

Also, Jay is also the biggest cuddler ever.  When I lay on the futon, he jumps up with me and just snuggles right on in.
